Q. Where can I find a festival program on the website?

A. If you cannot find the program online then this will be because the events may not be confirmed and ready to publish. We may be actively looking for more artists and inspirational work to be included in the festival up to four months before the festival date. You may register with us to receive news and updates as and when they become available by using the contact form at the bottom of this page.

Q. Is the festival presenting only projections on buildings or will there also be screenings of 'traditional' multivision?

A. Each edition of the festival may vary. In general we try to present at least one session of multivision screenings. We will make any further announcements on this website and to anyone who has registered.

Q. I cannot find a price list, does this mean that the festival is free?

A. Yes, in general the festival is free to attend. All of the outdoor public events have free entrance. You may if you wish contribute with a donation at each of the venues during or after each of the events (or online here). If there are any workshops then these are always free to members of Luce Dipinta Multivisioni, however sometimes there may be a small fee to non-members and booking in advance would be advisable.

Q. What happens if it rains, are any of the events outdoors?

A. Yes, there are events outdoors and there will be little (if any) shelter provided. Unless the weather becomes really stormy the presentations will proceed as planned.  If an evening is cancelled then we aim to repeat it on another evening if possible. We will add a local weather widget to our website so you could always check here a few days before, but don't let a bit of water put you off coming, just come prepared :-)

Q. I am an artist/photographer/designer and would like to show my work at this festival or a future one. How may I participate?

A. Any artist or group (professional or amateur) may apply to have their work screened at the festival or apply to create a new building projection. However there is some criteria which needs to be met. In general, this will not be your first work and in the case of building projections you must have created one and presented to an audience before. We strongly suggest that you register your interest with us now. Click to read more information.

Q. Is the festival presenting only architectural projections or will there also be space for artists to present 'traditional' multivision?

A. We will present at least one session of traditional multivision screenings. Anyone may apply to have their work screened. However there is some criteria which needs to be met. In general, this will not be your first work and you must have presented to a public audience before. It will not be longer than 10 minutes. It will not infringe any copyrights. We strongly suggest that you register your interest with us now then send us a link to your work online.

Q. When is the application deadline for artists to participate in the festival?

A. The sooner the better. For architectural projections we do not have a deadline date set, however in general the selection is usually made no later than 6 months before the festival date, therefore your proposal should arrive with us before then. When each building has been confirmed for use by the festival, they will be mapped, any relevant mapping files or templates will be supplied to the artists that have been selected.. Final delivery of finished work is one month before the festival date, to give time for testing. Please register here to receive news and updates as and when they become available.

Q. When is the submission deadline for traditional multivision shows (not architectural)?

A. If your work has been selected then delivery of final high resolution copy is due 1 month before the festival date. However, to submit your work to be considered for selection this should be done at least 5 months before festival date.

Q. Is there the recommended time of duration?

A. In 2015 the architectural projections ranged from 3 to 20 minutes. You may produce work at any length between these times. Ideally 10 minutes but the selection process does not put too much importance on this, an approximate time given would be enough for us to plan the programme. For major presentations like adding live performers or live music we would expect approxiamtely 20 minutes.

Q. If my application to be a participating architectural artist is accepted, what can I expect in terms of financial help?

A. At present the festival organisers are unable to guarantee full funding of individual projects as there is no budget to pay all artists on a commission basis. However, as a minimum, we are able to assist with accommodation at the festival itself and transfers from/to airports or train stations (within a reasonable distance) in which case the accommodation must be arranged and booked by us. In some cases there may be a possibility of contributing towards production costs and travel expenses but this will depend entirely upon budget availability at the time the festival closes. There will also usually be at least one festival dinner/party for all participating artists and staff (in 2015 there were three). We therefore suggest that you may be able to source art funding or sponsorship locally to you, especially if you are living and working outside of Italy.

We also recommend travel insurance be taken before booking any travel tickets, in case of cancellation/postponement.

All projection, audio and related equipment will be paid for and provided on site by Luce Dipinta, during the festival and for test/rehearsals.

Q. Can I use specialized audio and presentation equipment?

A. If your proposal fits within the remit of the festival (reviewed on an individual basis) then you may include extra audio and visual hardware and/or software in your production, however you must provide a detailed technical list along with your application. We will then let you know which items we can provide for you, you will have the responsibility of supplying and setting up of any equipment which you provide. We cannot accept any liability for any equipment not provided by us.

In general, all projection, audio and related equipment will be paid for and provided on site by Luce Dipinta, during the festival and for test/rehearsals. We suggest that if your show runs directly from specialised computer software, you bring the computer with you, we will not install other software on our media servers/computers.

Q. Is it possible to include a live performer to interact with the architectural projections?

A. Yes, we encourage a live element to be included. This may be live music, song, poetry, dance or acting. You may also integrate these elements into the projections using live video camera feeds. You may also consider if there is physical interaction of the projected images by someone live or even audience participation. Detail as much as possible about you ideas in your proposal, including a list of technical hardware required.

Q. What projection equipment will the festival be using?

A. The projection equipment will depend upon the final choice of buildings being used, we will ensure that the projectors have sufficient brightness for the buildings involved, we shall be using PC media servers installed with our preferred s/w Dataton Watchout (or Stumpfl Wings). One building will be using a single Barco HDX20FLEX WUXGA 20,000 ansi lumens. The second, Sozialsprengel, will be using 2 overlapping WUXGA projectors 8,500 - 10,000 ansi lumens.

We aim to have a Watchout media server with live feed, video input for those who wish to connect a camera as part of their show.

Q. Is it possible to produce work for the festival in surround sound?

A. Surround sound is not supported yet. This would only be possible if you provide the extra hardware/software and set it up on-site. The festival provides a high quality stereo audio system and related hardware. If you require microphones, video cameras for content input and/or extra cables for any live element then we should be able to provide this on the condition that we have notice of this in your submission document. If there is anything we are unable to provide then we shall inform you in order that you make your own provision.

Q. May I propose curating/presenting a workshop for the festival?

A. Yes. We are always interested in providing workshops to our audience and other artists. The main criteria is that the subject and/or results from the workshop is related to the projected image or photography/videography. For example in 2015 Basurama from Madrid ran a youth workshop to create a bicycle from recycled material, capable of carrying a projector with it's own power and audio system - a Bicinecleta.

 Q. May I/we propose an exisiting installation for the festival, one that does not use projections?

A. Yes. Lana Lights is essentially a light and projections festival. If you have an existing work which is free-standing either indoors or outdoors, we are happy to consider this even if no projectors are used. it may be lighting, LED, digital displays or anything that emits light with two exception - fire and lasers. We'd especially be interested in work which the public may interact with, or that does not necessarily need to used be at night. In any case please provide links to view online videos, images and descriptions of this work, event where it was presented and target age group. In most cases this would need to be installed and operated by you, although we would help with staff where needed. Any health and safety information should be included along with  any specialist equpment you feel we should source for you. Basically we need to understand the logistics involved and any associated costs in order to calculate any extra budget funding.
